Overview
“Our ancestors left Africa between 100,000 and 120,000 years ago. Coming up out of the Middle East,
some of them turned left into Europe, and others turned right into the farther reaches of Asia.
Their descendants would not meet again until 100,000 years later, at the Strait of Belle Isle.”
–Full Circle: First Contact Exhibit, Provincial Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador (2000)
This is where East met West when two streams of humanity finally came face-to-face at L’Anse aux Meadows around AD 1000, at the only confirmed Norse site in the New World.
From St. John’s you will travel across the province visiting an array of archaeology sites that trace the steps of 9000 years of human history. These itineraries highlight sites representing all the cultures who have lived here – from the oldest known burial mound in North America to some of the earliest European settlements and industries in North America.
This self-drive tour will guide you to a series of Provincial and National Historic Sites and UNESCO World Heritage Sites where archaeologists have uncovered the rich history and heritage of our province. This 10 or 14 night itinerary includes destinations with active archaeology field projects operating through some of the warmer months of summer where you can observe archaeologists uncovering the past before your very eyes.
