Overview
Your 6-night self-drive journey begins in Corner Brook, a city at the mouth of the Bay of Islands on the west coast of Newfoundland. Explore some of the city’s wonderful hiking trails and the Bay of Islands with visits to Lark Harbour, Bottle Cove and many other beautiful communities nearby.
You will then make your way to Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to some of the world’s most significant geological discoveries. It was here that geologists proved the theory of plate tectonics.
Observe the remains of continental drift while cruising through Trout River Pond, or hike the red, rugged Tablelands where the earth’s mantle lays exposed.
Here, ancient seafloors and ocean avalanches were exposed to the land by the collision of the Earth’s tectonic plates 500 million years ago. The result is a gorgeous contrasting landscape of lush green forest, wild marshland, and incredible mountain views. Walk the boardwalk to Western Brook Pond Fjord, keeping an eye out for wildlife and exceptional plant life, like butterwarts, great sundrew, and the carnivorous pitcher plant.
