Observe the remains of continental drift while cruising through Trout River Pond, or hike the red, rugged Tablelands where the earth’s mantle lays exposed.
Here, ancient seafloors and ocean avalanches were exposed to the land by the collision of the Earth’s tectonic plates 500 million years ago. The result is a gorgeous contrasting landscape of lush green forest, wild marshland, and incredible mountain views. Walk the boardwalk to Western Brook Pond Fjord, keeping an eye out for wildlife and exceptional plant life, like butterwarts, great sundrew, and the carnivorous pitcher plant.
Once you leave Gros Morne, head east to the Iceberg Capital of the World: Twillingate, a rural fishing village where authentic Newfoundland lifestyle holds steadfast. Wander the historical streets of this friendly town where you’ll be quick to make new friends, or hike the rugged coastline for wide open ocean views. Take a boat cruise, where you may find whales, dolphins, harp seals, and sea birds. If it’s the right time of year, you’re likely to get up close and personal with some icebergs!
